Birthday
Presents
by Ann Gianola
28 Topic 2
Fip and Fop are twins. Today is their birthday.
Their family has a party. Grandma and Grandpa
are there.
Grandma has two boxes. “You can each open
one,” she says.
Fip and Fop hug and kiss Grandma and
Grandpa. “Thank you!” they say.
29Two Birthday Presents
This one is mine!” says Fop. He opens the box.
Its a set of building blocks.
Then this one is mine!” says Fip. He opens the
other box. Its a helicopter!
Fop stares at the helicopter. Its big and shiny. It
has lots of interesting buttons. Fop forgets all about
the building blocks.
30 Topic 2
Wow!” says Fip. “I love my present!”
The presents are for both of you,” says
Grandpa. “Please share.”
“OK,” says Fip, “but its my turn now.
Fip pushes buttons. The helicopter goes up and
down. It goes left and right.
Fop wants to play with the helicopter. But Fip
doesn’t share.
31Two Birthday Presents
“Fop,” says Grandpa, “you can play with the
building blocks.
“OK,” says Fop. But he isn’t happy.
“Lets build a city,” says Grandpa.
“I can help, too,” says Grandma. “Lets build a
very big city!”
Now Fop smiles.
32 Topic 2
Their city is growing. Fip puts the helicopter
down. Fop picks up more shapes. “Look!” he says.
“Now I’m building a tower!”
Fip sits down by Grandpa, Grandma and Fop.
“I can build the tower!” says Fip.
“No,” says Fop, “the blocks are mine.”
Fip feels sad. The helicopter is a fun toy. But
now he thinks the building blocks are more fun.
“Grandpa says we have to share,” he says.
33Two Birthday Presents
“Remember, you’re twins,” says Grandma. “You
share a birthday. Sometimes you share toys, too.
Sharing is important.
“Can we please share the building blocks?” asks Fip.
“OK,” says Fop.
“Blocks are easy to share,” says Grandma. “You
can both play with them! A helicopter is harder to
share. But you can take turns.”
34 Topic 2
Fip thinks for a minute. Then he picks up the
helicopter. He gives it to Fop.
“Do you want to fly the helicopter over our
city?” asks Fip.
“Sure!” says Fop.
You’re right, Grandma,” says Fip. “Sharing is
important.
And its more fun that way, too,” says Fop.

but sometimes it’s hard to see. What were you like in
the past? A time capsule can help you remember.

things inside a time capsule.
Then they hide it or bury it in the ground. They or
