Seasons come and
seasons go.
Summer sun and
winter snow.
Buds in spring and
leaves in fall.
Years have seasons,
four in all.

Winter is a
pretty sight.
Everything turns
snowy white.
There are many
things to do.
Sledding, skating,
snowmen, too.
155Seasons Come and Go
U9COrl1.indd 155 6/9/17 12:46
In the spring,
the flowers bloom.
Birds all chirp
outside your room.
Rain washes
the whole world clean,
as it makes the
trees grow green.

Next, the summer
comes along.
The sun is hot and
days are long.
Time to swim and
ride your bike,
play outside or
take a hike.
157Seasons Come and Go
U9COrl1.indd 157 6/9/17 12:46
Then comes fall.
The crisp, cool breeze
blows the leaves
down off the trees.
One more year is
nearly done.
Almost time for
winter fun.

Penguins
How do animals live in
cold weather?
Some animals move to a
warmer place. They migrate when
it gets too cold. Monarch butterflies
migrate. Many birds migrate, too.
Other animals stay in the cold.
For example, penguins live in
Antarctica. It is cold there all year.
They stand close to each other to
stay warm.
Other animals go into
a very deep sleep. This
is called hibernation. For
example, some kinds of
bears hibernate. They stay
in their dens. They don’t
come out until spring.

How do animals live
in hot weather?
Some animals live in the
desert. It is very hot and dry.
How do desert animals get
enough water?
When camels drink
water, they drink a lot. They
can drink more than 100 liters
of water in fifteen minutes!
Another desert animal is
the thorny devil. This lizard
lives in the Australian desert.
There isn’t much water, so the
lizard absorbs rain through
its skin!

How do animals live in
rainy weather?
Some animals live in
the rainforest. It is hot and
wet. How do animals stay
dry if they do not have a
raincoat or an umbrella?
Some animals, like
orangutans, make their own
umbrellas. They use leaves!
Reptiles, like snakes,
have scales. The scales are
waterproof. They do not let
the water in.
In summary, animals
have many ways to live
in their environment—no
matter what the weather
is like!
